[when she comes home, Grell has a bundle in her arms - one of red cloth, held close. she greets the cats with their usual pets and soft hellos, and then goes looking.]

Ardyn? Are you home?

[pleasant, cheerful. it's a normal moment for now - and she wants to show him this, since it came from the mailbox.]

[Ardyn is in the living room, with a single cat in his lap, the only one that was too comfortable to greet Grell immediately. Though when she draws close enough, Morla jumps from his lap and moves to greet her as well.]

That I am, Grell. [He had been reading a book, but it's easy enough to close it and set it on the coffee table for now. He stands to walk over to her, hoping to plant a kiss on her cheek as greeting.

It's hard not to notice the red cloth afterwards.] And what have you there?

[Rosalind has acquired herself a flashlight. Not one of those dinky pen ones, but the ones built for hurricanes, with four beams that'll probably blind you if you look directly in them. It's really no substitute for the sun, but she'll make do as she walks through the streets. (She's most certainly not driving in the pitch black).

She knocks at Ardyn's door. She's a few things she wants to request of him, things that she likely could have over the network, but that probably are just easier to say in person.]

[She needn't wait long before he answers the door, swinging it open wide when he sees that it's Rosalind. Behind her, he's greeted by the darkness, and it makes something settle unwell in him still -- uncertainty as to why, but existing nonetheless.]

Rosalind?

[He glances at that flashlight, and at least she's not wandered all the way out here in the complete pitch black.]

Did you come here by yourself?

[ It's been a few days since Yu finally talked to Souji, and since then he's been ... well, quiet. As he's been ever since he's come to stay at his uncle's home, but there's a different character to this silence. It's not as melancholy. This silence feels more like a held breath, uncertain before a plunge.

That evening, as Yu cooks dinner, he'll pause once his uncle wanders into the kitchen. ]

... could I ask you something?

[January has not proven to be an... easy month for Ardyn. It shows in the strain of his eyes and his smile, but he still puts up his usual brave, somewhat airy face for Yu. For the sake of family, they are often worth the extra effort. Even if his mind wanders at times; even if Yu's question breaks the silence, and he gazes over at his nephew.

He noticed Yu had kept to himself a bit for the past few days. Ardyn thought to give him time to bring it up himself before he pressed, as all good uncles should do. But for now, he responds without hesitation.]

By all means. Ask away.

How would you like to help us help you out? Your observation period's up and I want you on this particular assignment. You'll be fine, you're probably not going to die, and we'll be able to monitor you from here. We need help. You've got the skills needed even if you don't know it yet. I know it and that's what counts.

You'll be working with a group (wish I could give you the names, still putting the lists together), but your assignment partner is Xiaolang Li. Should you choose to accept this assignment, you will need to meet at the subway and we'll go from there.

[There is an inordinate amount of time that passes before there's a response in the affirmative to this text. He has to mull over what all this might mean, what responsibilities are expected of him.

But in the end, he knew he would accept. The wish to unravel further mysteries was too grand of a thing.]

[sent in the morning, there is a picture of two of the cats lounging on Ardyn's side of the bed.]

the bed feels too big without you.

[she's been trying to not say she misses him - it hasn't even been ten days - but it's still strange, after adjusting to someone being right there, to be treated to an absence.]

[Time moves quickly because he's kept busy, all the time. But he's tired, as they all are, and just to hear from her brings him gladness, but also melancholy. He misses her, very poignantly.

The picture makes him smile, though. And terribly, terribly jealous of his cats.]

Hopefully it will return to feeling like its proper size soon. What a trial it has been, being here for so long and not being able to see you in person.

I miss you dearly, my love. [He does not hesitate to type this out.] I hope you're still doing well? The city has not burst into flames just yet, has it?

When it comes to his job, Togusa will meticulously check and double-check information to make sure he's gotten it right before acting on anything. But when it comes to his friends, the man can be too trusting. Which is how he's ended up heading to Ardyn's place with what he believes is a very-welcomed wedding present, on the advice of their new mutual friend, Pitou. He has no idea that he's become a cat's paw for the world's strangest sort of revenge.

Togusa very carefully sets the carrier down, and adjusts the blanket over it, as if the object could be any sort of surprise. He peers in at the fluff-ball one last time, and smiles fondly, before he rings the doorbell.

Ardyn's home, thankfully, and so it doesn't take long for him to answer the door. It swings open, and Togusa is greeted by the familiar face.

"Togusa," he says with a small smile, an obvious sort of greeting. He glances at the man, curious as to why he might be visiting -- a social call for the sake of it, he wonders? At some point, however, Ardyn's eyes flicker down to the rectangular-shaped object with a blanket over it. His eyebrows raise, but then he merely looks at his friend again.

"To what do I owe the pleasure?"

[it's rare that she wakes up before him, but if she was going to, a Sunday would be her best chance. that day, with both of them off, it was almost luxurious to take her time, to slowly detach herself from the sheets and the warmth of someone else there, careful not to disturb him.

on a whim, it's his shirt from the day before she gathers up and slips on while going to get water, though reviewing her plans for the day and finding a glorious absence of anything, she returns to the comfort she left. sitting up, very lightly stroking his hair, she watches him rest, glad that for once he's actually sleeping like a normal human.]

[It is rare that he sleeps in like this, a quiet morning allowed to rest, instead of waking up and tending to whatever needs to be done, so early in the morning. Rarer still that she wakes up before him, but sometimes miracles do indeed happen. It isn't so bad, though, for when his eyes do eventually flutter open, it is her face that Ardyn is met with.

It takes a small while before he does, but when Ardyn awakens in a half-lidded state, drowsily peering up at Grell, he cannot help but softly grin.]

...Good morning. You're awake early.

[No, he's just slept in. His brain is still slowly whirring to life, that he doesn't yet notice that she's borrowed his shirt.]

[It feels like Freya writes this out a hundred times. It frustrates her to be hesitating like this. Right before she hits sends, a nagging voice keeps telling her that it's not going to help anything. So, after the umpteenth revision and glass of mental filter killer, she finally sends it.]

[usually, Grell sleeps through the night. usually, once Ardyn is asleep, the house is undisturbed.

but tonight is different. tonight, when everything should be quiet, Grell is awake, slipping out of their bed and heading to the living room, one light clicked on.

she lays there, on the couch, twisting her wedding ring around her finger. trying to ground herself, trying to say it was just a dream. just a memory. the house is quiet, and she's here. that's what she has to remind herself of.]

[A wandering cat is the first to come out and greet her. It’s Rochester, who meanders just close enough to the couch to be in reach, sitting and looking up at Grell. He lets out a meow that matches his perpetually grumpy-looking face.

And only minutes later do footsteps sound. Perhaps if Ardyn were a man who slept deeply, Grell would have the night to herself, her thoughts her own. But he awakens easily, notices that her spot is empty — so much has her presence next to him been the norm, that to be alone in his own bed now feels alien and wrong.

He appears soon after, his form lingering only briefly in the hallway. Ardyn then crosses closer to her, a faint smile on his features.]

You’re picking up bad habits from your husband, I see. Staying up late beyond what is reasonable. Does sleep escape you, too?

[And yet... he’s not surprised, honestly. Something’s been bothering her; he can tell. He had merely been waiting for her to say something, to come to him about whatever was gnawing at her mind.

Now, maybe, he can afford to inquire about it on this sleepless night.]
