They're not. One of them is particularly difficult to wrap, and the end result would be laughable even if I did try.
[But, on the coffee table sits the "presents", out for him to see. Two are indeed not all that exciting (a dictionary and a thesaurus, brand new), though the more visible present is indeed something to be glad for -- at least, for anyone with an inclination towards writing.]
What do you think?
[He motions at it. It's an old typewriter, black and having lost some of its sheen over the years, but certainly still in working order.]
no subject
Aw, you should have done it just for the laughs.
[but he's snickering, until his eyes land on]
[the presents]
[prompto stops entirely, quiet, as he takes in what he's looking at.]
no subject
You really got a typewriter! This is amazing!
[sitting down on the floor, prompto starts typing away, slowly, even if there's no paper to press the ink on]
Holy shit-- and these are dictionaries? They still exist in paper form? [lol]
[he's looking through the pages too, once he's done playing with the typewriter]
no subject
Do you like it? It's a bit different than typing at a laptop, obviously. You'll have to get used to the feel and the weight, but there's something novel about typing away, seeing ink planted on paper with each keystroke.
[And yes, dictionaries still exist in physical form, Prompto. Stop making him feel old!]
A dictionary and, even better, a thesaurus. Something every aspiring writer needs.
no subject
This is really awesome. Really!
[he likes it a lot]
I thought you were kidding when you said you'd get me a typewriter!
[...treeful is not a word? why, he feels a bit disappointed. time to set the dictionary aside. won't even bother with the thesaurus. it's clear he is not one to receive many presents, so even though he's gotten what could be considered rather "boring" ones, he's still goddamn excited about them.]
[it's a childish kind of excitement, in the sense that nothing could possibly bring him down.]
[prompto beams, smiling brightly from all the way down here]
Thank you, Ardyn!

His voice is threaded with the waning of his laughter.] I'd never joke about a serious writing endeavor. All I can do to prepare you for it, I shall.
[And, of course, he adds with a fondness:] You're welcome. [He's all but forgotten to ask about Prompto's appearance.]
no subject
[turning back to ardyn, he grins]
Right. You really want that story.
Do you maybe have a bag I could use to carry these...? I'll have to leave the typewriter here if that's okay. Maybe even write the story here! I don't have that much space back in my room. [as ardyn knows. he stands up, and paces about] I can get paper from the store on my way back, too... Do I need to get ink?
no subject
[You know, as cats do.]
Don't worry about the ink or the paper. If you're going to leave it here, it'll be ready to go when you return.
[He'll get everything prepared for him.]
What's in the bag, though? Actually, why are you dressed like that? It's strange seeing your hair that way.
no subject
I'm going for my second job interview at the electronics store.
Thought it was about time I get some real hours rather than random ones.
no subject
[Ardyn looks surprised, but certainly not disapproving.]
Looking for a more stable schedule in your life, now?
no subject
[he picks up his bag and puts it on his shoulders, turning around to look over at ardyn and doing a dorky sot of pose, finger-guns and sort of bouncing off his feet]
Noct's all better now and I wanna hang out with him as often as possible. That, and I gotta get serious what with the new semester starting up. I'm having two more classes this year, too, and I don't wanna lose my scholarship by taking things lightly.
no subject
That's a very responsible decision for you to have made, Prompto. I'm proud of you.
[And though the words are as breezy as they often are, it's sincere.]
A bit of structure never went amiss in anyone's life, you know. You'll be able to make plans more reliably now.
no subject
Thank you!
[what he does do is nervously fix at his bangs, pushing them behind his ears.]
I'm aiming to be the best version of me possible! So, if you ever need a new laptop or phone and I do get the job, I'll help you get a sweet deal on it.
[a smile on his face, and more quietly, again]
Thanks.
no subject
Carving out something resembling structure in one's life (not just in the workplace, but in general) was the path to adulthood proper. He'd only encourage Prompto, even if it did make him (so obviously) emotional. It was positive, so it was fine.]
Of course. I should be thanking you for such a generous offer, instead. Do you need any advice for your upcoming interview in the meanwhile?
no subject
[but of course he's just being a smartass. he checks his watch for the time and then adjusts his cap on his head]
--but, I'll take anything else. I really want this job.
no subject
[Even if Prompto was being a smartass about it.]
Be confident. That's the most important thing. If you can manage that, the rest will follow with ease.
no subject
Yeah, it's not like I don't know what I'm signing up for. I can take apart a computer and put it together again if they asked me to, no problem.
[standing prim and proper, he faces ardyn]
Do I look good? [put together, he means]
no subject
[Well, not suit-and-tie professional, but professional enough to look like a helpful employee at a electronics store. And that's all that matters.]
Remember, back straight, shoulders aligned, and smile with confidence. You're bright enough as it is, so it shouldn't be difficult for you.
no subject
[almost like a mary poppins sequence...]
I won't let you down. I'll come back later today with good news, for sure.
[he doesn't mean to cut this short, but he really needs to go; he holds onto the straps of his backpack and tilts his cap up with a finger, walking over to the door]
You'll be around?
no subject
Ardyn gives him a look that might as well be read as an "affirmative, good job" as Prompto heads towards the door.]
Always.
See you later, and good luck.
