[And Ardyn, only the other hand, feels as if the gesture was nothing, really. It's so evident in everything about the man -- his casual air, the way that he moves with ease around an apartment that isn't even his. It's almost as if the gesture of kindness isn't even worth mulling over.]

The kettle begins to whistle, lightly at first. Then it crescendos, prompting Ardyn to remove it from its burner. He flips off the stove.]

Tell me if I'm prying, Prompto, but might I ask what's the issue with your stomach?

[prompto's eyes follow from atop the surface of the counter, and he blanches at the question. it's not necessarily a bad thing--or an odd thing to be asked. he's not very keen to share his health history with just about anyone, but the man did come all the way here to check up on him and help him out with some homemade remedies.]

[so he just... quietly groans and leans back on the chair, hesitating before answering, his biggest sin...]

Well, you see, the thing is...

[stalling...]

I'm, uh, what some would call lactose intolerant...

[Aaaand Ardyn arches a brow, even as he's pouring in the hot water and letting the tea steep for now. He turns his head to look at Prompto, tone vacillating between amusement and bafflement.]

All this because you... drank a glass of milk? Hm?

[He's not trying to tease, really. (Maybe.) But at least it's clear he doesn't sound particularly disapproving, one way or another.]

More like pizza for dinner.

[he knows he did a foolish thing, but sometimes he's a foolish guy who forgets that he doesn't actually have extra capsules of his medicine elsewhere. sure, he had taken two capsules before he ate pizza last night.]

[but his breakfast...]

[he suffers for being all over the place sometimes.]

[He picks up the mug when he's done, and puts the kettle back on the stove to let it cool. Then Ardyn finally makes his way to where the young man is seated, offering him the tea.]

So you're telling me that your mortal enemy was nothing more than an entire pizza? You should be more mindful.

[oh! sits up straighter at the proffered cup, careful to not spill anything and blow on it for a bit... trying to think of an intelligent comeback]

When you say it that way it does sound kinda stupid.

[kinda. he's giving himself the benefit of the doubt!]

It was just so hard to resist... [takes a short sip, testing how hot it is]

[Ardyn will take it upon himself to settle into a chair across from Prompto. He won't overstay his welcome, but he won't stay on his feet when entertaining a conversation, either.]

Then think of how you're feeling now, the next time you hear the siren song of a pizza. You don't want to spend more time than necessary bowing down to the porcelain god, do you?

[He hums in amusement at his own words.]

How's the tea? Careful not to burn your tongue.

It was an honest mistake!

[who in their right mind is really awake for breakfast time? --best not to ask that outloud, prompto knows he's rightfully in the wrong here.]

[now, he takes another sip of his tea, a more meaningful one, tasting the ginger in his tongue, as ardyn takes a seat across from him. prompto pulls his feet under his chair, linked at the ankles, a practiced motion. the tea's hot, but he can handle it. does end up making a face at the slightly spicy flavour. (okay, he totally burnt his tongue a bit.)]

It's--alright. Never had ginger tea before though. [he stares at the liquid, then back at ardyn] I'll make sure I have my medicine next time before I decide to voluntarily eat something that'll make me sick. Thank you, sir.

[Ardyn leans an elbow on the surface before him, gesturing at the mug with his hand. There's a glimmer of something akin to amusement in his eyes, more casual than what he exudes when he's in class, teaching.]

"Alright". Alright is just a polite way of saying you're not sure if you like it. I can hardly blame you; ginger is something of an acquired taste for some.

And you can thank me by being more careful next time. Nothing more, nothing less.

[prompto snorts into his cup at that. he didn't go to class and he's still getting a lecture on the importance of using specific wording, lest you get misinterpreted all over the place.]

[sure is nice not to have to pay for the law lectures]

I'll take your word for it.

[another gulp of tea, face and all; maybe it isn't an instant fix, but it seems like he's feeling less nauseous, at least.]

[(prompto's curious)]

You don't have kids, do you, sir?

[He watches Prompto diligently sip the tea. Ardyn quietly wonders to himself if it'll help; even if just a little, it's worth it. (Not to mention the face he makes is kind of entertaining in its own right.)

The question derails this train of thought, however.]

Kids? [lord no.] No, I can't say that I do.

[it does help a bit! and it shows, if by means of prompto's growing levels of energy]

Yeah, you don't seem the type. [whatever that means] Ah, but not in a bad way! Swear I don't mean it like that!

[knows he'll have to clarify]

More like, you're surprisingly good at looking after others.

[if this were anyone else, they'd be embarrassed after saying that. since this is... prompto...well]

[And other men might be embarrassed upon hearing such a compliment. Ardyn is not, though he does grin a little lopsidedly at the admission.]

I'm not a cold-hearted man, unlike what some of my students might believe. [He's a tough grader, and expects a lot from his class, but the real Ardyn Izunia also can empathize when it's required of him. Sometimes even when it's not.]

There's a fine balance when it comes to strictness versus understanding. Vacillating between the two of them, without leaning too much on one or the other, is something of an art. The best sort of teachers learn that as quickly as they can.

[prompto hums, then takes another generous gulp from his tea--a bit more used to the taste of ginger by now]

Maybe I'm being subjective because you don't really assess my work. [prompto does count his blessing; he ain't not fool] Though, at the same time, it's quite nice to know we have these kind of teachers in our university.

It'd suck if our teachers didn't care...

I can assign you work if you want. A truly more realistic experience of being in my class, and maybe then you'll be eating these words of yours.

Or, I suppose, give you more music essays to write. You did well enough with the first one, as hastily done as it was.

[prompto makes an immediate face at that, something between rising panic and definite not-wanting. he sits up straighter, enough to make the chair hit the wall a bit, quickly stammering for an excuse.]

I do better under pressure, but... I don't think I can have the time to spare on pretending-to-be-in-classes essays... [he spends no time in trying to make that delicate-sounding at all] But having music essays is cool! Oh, I have tons of old vinyl disks I've found at flea markets over the years.

[he presents them over then settles back on his chair]

These are my favourite. I go to the music shop to listen to them. --I'll get a record player soon enough, but it's so different to hear it from vinyl than MP3 format.

[When Prompto manages to shuffle back, the crease of Ardyn's brow lessens, seeing that he's managed to return without spilling his tea or otherwise tumbling over in the few feet he's moved since he wandered off.]

Your favorites? [Ardyn takes the time to pick up each vinyl, one by one, intending to portray a faux criticism, but the farce doesn't last long. He recognizes each of these immediately by their iconic covers alone.]

Well, let it never be said you don't have good taste in music. [He holds up Abbey Road in particular.] This is my second favorite Beatles' album.

[excitedly leans forward, smiling and nodding, tufts of hair moving around with the motion.]

Too obvious? [A lilt to his tone which infers him crying foul at the very idea, though it's clear that he's also enjoying this conversation. The mirthful look hasn't left, and if Prompto wanted company, Ardyn can provide it in terms of talking about vinyl records ~~like a bunch of hipsters~~]

What's too obvious about Sgt. Pepper's? [He liked Sgt. Pepper's before it was cool, etc etc. Prompto can obviously guess which is his favorite album, then.]

Well, it's their number one album for one. [finishes up his tea, setting the cup up on the counter and shuffling to get his phone out of his pocket] I mean, the songs are great. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Strawberry Fields are my faves from it, and Penny Lane too...

[he looks up the best-seller chart online--]

32 million copies sold, it's in the top 15. It just [looks up] seems like the popular choice fans go for. [an amused expression on his face, he continues] I guess that kind of logic applies for people my age more though.

[Ardyn arches a brow at him again, leaning back in his seat, crossing his arms against his chest. He looks amused, despite his inner impulse to immediately say that it's their number one album for a reason.]

There's hardly anything wrong with it being popular. Outside of being an outstanding Beatles' album, it's also one of the best concept records ever produced. The only one that rivals it, in my humble opinion, is- [aaand he taps a finger at the Pink Floyd album] -this right here.

[But then he hums with amusement, choosing to lift up the Beatles record, flipping it over to inspect it. He quotes lyrics from one song in particular, though not from this album.] "A crowd of people stood and stared, they'd seen his face before. Nobody was really sure if he was from the House of Lords." A Day in the Life is my favorite from Sgt. Pepper's. But I'm odd like that.

[on the one hand, prompto is... curious, about why that song is ardyn's favourite outside of "i'm odd like that." he's sat in ardyn's lectures and knows he's got a way with words; one of the reasons prompto doesn't mind sitting in them isbecause of how fun and interesting it is to hear this man speak. opinions and comments and facts and all.]

[he lifts his gaze from the cover of the album, trying to make the connection until he realises ardyn isn't actually reading from the back cover, and then starts at the question for a moment.]

Oh, yeah, but I can get one at some point.

[he hates being a charity case, so he easily dismisses the question, to counter with his own]

How come you remembered that specific line of the song? Has it just stuck with you all this time?

[The idea of him needing a record player is quickly dismissed (very quickly, he notes to himself), but don't think that it's so easily forgotten. But, for now at least, he chooses to answer Prompto's question.

He gives it the briefest of thoughts before he replies, however.]

The entire beginning of that song is difficult to forget. That verse in particular is sad, in a morbid sort of way. Someone having killed himself, and the people standing around him wondering if he was a man of consequence.

Inspiration was taken from an actual accident, if I recall correctly. Poetry and lyricism mimicking reality.
