And if you've no king to serve here?
no subject
There's no king here.

So you'll find yourself new purpose? Or someone else to serve?

[ Their attention turns down into their dwindling coffee. ]
I suppose we'll see how strong my biological imperatives become. I was always somewhat human, but... I don't know.
[ There had been doubt that the ants could ever truly behave by the rules of society. ]

Preferably not strong enough to instill any frustrating restlessness in you. I should hope that you lean back into your more human qualities if or when that happens.
[He considers something.]
Your opinion of both of your halves being equally important -- would you apply that to everyone else, as well?

[ But: they don't know. And they won't know until it becomes to exhibit, or not. ]
I think it's up to everyone else to decide that. But... that they're likely biased in a way I'm not.

I have always determined myself in defiance of others. [ In defiance of the tragedy that had started their human life, the one people whispered about, assured it would haunt them. ] I can make my own decisions about who and what I am. I don't have to be a woman. I don't have to be a human. I don't have to obey.
[ They look away again. They usually don't say those kinds of things out loud. They preferred not to defend their choices to others. ]
Maybe that was easier to do, when deep down I was beholden to something else entirely.
[ A sentiment they find distasteful. ]

A hand comes up to pinch at the bridge of his nose.]
If you were beholden to it at all. How much of nature will overtake nurture? I can't hope to answer that.
[He shifts in his seat.]
I envy you, however. You view it in such a straightforward way.

[ So what's the point of getting too upset about it. There are thoughts, irritations, things niggling in the back of their mind, but in the end they don't know if they're outraged yet, or not. ]
no subject
[That's vaguely irritating, but so often has he fallen upon this way of thinking (because he has no choice) that he just accepts it with an almost-eye roll.]
So seems to be the norm.

[ Pitou wants to see their fucking laboratories... ]

[He recalls what he had been told when he spent a month practically sequestered to the bunker in the forest. And what he's read from their somewhat more recent posts.]
They claim us knowing too much too fast will be the death of us all. For what little that matters now.
no subject
[ Maybe. Or maybe history would repeat itself and this morally ambiguous kitty cat would wield their knowledge irresponsibly. ]
